You Look Older for the Same Reason You Are at Risk: Dr. John Spencer Ellis on Inflammation in Men

Sep 4, 2026

Men over 65 show higher inflammatory markers than age-matched women, reducing longevity. A longevity expert says the process that dulls a man's face is the identical process driving his cardiovascular and cognitive risk.

Las Vegas, Nevada Sep 3, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - A man looks in the mirror at 52 and sees something he cannot name. Not wrinkles exactly. Puffier. Duller. Softer through the jaw and heavier through the middle. Tired in a way that a good night's sleep no longer fixes.

He files it under aging.

According to Dr. John Spencer Ellis, an internationally recognized authority on men's health, longevity and human performance, he is looking at something with a clinical name, a blood test and a mortality curve attached.

"What he is seeing is inflammation," said Dr. Ellis. "And the reason that matters is not vanity. The process that changed his face is the same process changing his arteries. One is visible and one is not. Most men act on neither."

Inflammaging, and why men carry more of it

The phenomenon has been named in the literature since 2000, when Franceschi and colleagues coined "inflammaging" -- chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation that develops with age, characterized by elevated serum cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-).

Its prognostic weight is well established. The PolSenior study, covering several thousand adults aged 65 and older, found IL-6 and CRP were both good predictors of physical performance, cognitive performance and mortality risk. A 2025 analysis of the ReportAGE cohort built a composite inflammaging score from IL-6, IL-10 and CXCL9 in 1,009 hospitalized older adults and assessed it against 10-year mortality.

The sex difference is the part relevant to men. A 2025 review in Frontiers in Immunology reported that men over 65 exhibited higher IL-6 levels and related markers than age-matched women, correlating with reduced longevity. A separate Brazilian longitudinal study of adults aged 80 and over found that in the male group specifically, increases in IL-6 (p = 0.028) and CRP (p = 0.016) were significantly associated with deaths.

Why it shows up in the mirror first

Dr. Ellis argues the visible changes are not a side effect. They are the same mechanism, expressed in tissues men happen to look at every morning.

Visceral fat is an inflammatory organ. The abdominal weight men accumulate after 40 is not passive storage. It secretes IL-6 and TNF- directly into circulation, and it contains aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen.

Inflammation degrades collagen and impairs its repair. Dermal collagen already declines roughly one percent per year after age 30. A chronic inflammatory environment accelerates breakdown and slows synthesis.

Diet drives glycation. Patterns rich in saturated fat and sugar promote advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which bind the RAGE receptor on immune and endothelial cells and trigger NF-B-mediated inflammation. AGEs also cross-link collagen directly, producing stiffness and loss of elasticity.

IL-6 attacks muscle. It impairs muscle regeneration by disrupting satellite cell function and promoting catabolic pathways, contributing to sarcopenia. "That is the one men never connect," said Dr. Ellis. "Muscle is the structure that holds a face and a frame up. Lose it and you look hollowed out, regardless of what your skin is doing."

Cortisol and alcohol add fluid retention, which is why men in high-stress periods describe looking swollen rather than merely tired.

The same fire, different rooms

The mortality side runs on identical fuel.

Chronic stress produces sustained HPA and sympathetic activation, promoting oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and pro-atherogenic signaling. A meta-analysis of 17 studies found high allostatic load associated with all-cause mortality at HR 1.22 and cardiovascular mortality at HR 1.31. Burnout in the top 20 percent of scores carried HR 1.79 for coronary heart disease across 8,838 employees.

Diet contributes measurably. A dose-response meta-analysis of 207,291 adults found ultra-processed food consumption associated with all-cause mortality at HR 1.21 and cardiovascular mortality at HR 1.50.

Even isolation registers. Research from UCLA's social genomics group identified the conserved transcriptional response to adversity -- a reproducible pattern in which social threat upregulates pro-inflammatory gene expression while downregulating antiviral response genes.

"Same fire," said Dr. Ellis. "Different rooms. The face, the arteries, the brain and the muscle are all burning the same fuel."

What actually lowers it

Dr. Ellis is blunt that the effective interventions are unglamorous and almost entirely free.

Reduce visceral fat, because it is the primary manufacturing site. Track waist circumference monthly rather than scale weight.

Fix sleep -- a fixed wake time seven days a week, seven to nine hours in bed. Short sleep raises cortisol and inflammatory load simultaneously.

Halve the alcohol. Count the honest weekly number for two weeks first.

Train. Resistance work addresses the visceral fat and the sarcopenia together; aerobic work improves endothelial function.

Displace ultra-processed food with a whole-food base, which lowers AGE exposure directly.

Rebuild social connection, which the CTRA research indicates moves gene expression in the correct direction.

Then measure."Get hs-CRP on your next panel," said Dr. Ellis. "It costs almost nothing, and it responds to intervention within a quarter. Most men have never had it drawn. It is the single most useful number nobody asks for."

The coaching programs

The Health, Longevity and Aesthetic Optimization Program for Men 40+ is a 90-day personalized engagement built around exactly these variables: comprehensive intake covering sleep, stress load, alcohol and nutrition; bloodwork guidance alongside the client's own physician, including inflammatory markers; a protocol across training, nutrition, sleep architecture and stress physiology; and twelve weekly one-on-one coaching sessions. Body composition and appearance are tracked deliberately.

"Men come to me about how they look and stay for what the bloodwork does," said Dr. Ellis. "That is not a bait and switch. It is the same mechanism, and the mirror is simply the part they check daily."

The Escape the Rat Race Coaching Program addresses the upstream driver for men whose work generates the chronic stress in the first place, converting decades of expertise into a simpler, location-flexible income model that returns time rather than consuming it.

Dr. Ellis is a coach and educator, not a physician, and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. His coaching is designed to work alongside licensed healthcare providers.

German chancellor urges global trade alliance as Germany deepens Indo-Pacific ties

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a global political alliance to defend rules-based trade, urging Germany and Indo-Pacific economies to strengthen economic partnerships and diversify supply chains as geopolitical tensions and intensifying U.S.-China competition reshape the global economy. Speaking at the opening of the 19th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business (APK) in Seoul on Friday, Merz proposed establishing a "global political alliance for rules-based trade" to defend and strengthen the international trading system and coordinate joint action when it comes under threat. “When supply chains become political pawns, when access to key technologies is imperiled or when efforts to secure raw materials become a projection of power rather than of fair partnership, this jeopardizes growth, prosperity and, ultimately, the security,” he said. “Countries that decouple lose security, innovative strength, prosperity and scope for action. We do not wish to withdraw but rather to expand our freedom of action.” Turning to bilateral ties, the chancellor said Germany and Korea

Goldman Sachs eyes Tmap Mobility acquisition by year-end

Goldman Sachs is seeking to acquire a controlling stake in Tmap Mobility, operator of Korea’s leading navigation app, from SK Square by the end of this year, seeing an investment opportunity in its lower valuation and vast trove of mobility data as autonomous driving advances, industry sources said Friday. For SK Square, SK Group’s investment arm and the largest shareholder of SK hynix, the sale is part of a broader strategy to focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors. The global investment bank is looking to invest between 600 billion won ($450 million) and 800 billion won to secure a 60 to 70 percent stake in Tmap Mobility. It is in talks to buy shares from SK Square, the largest shareholder with a 63.23 percent stake, as well as other financial investors, including Affirma Capital and EastBridge Partners, which each hold 9.83 percent, and KB Kookmin Bank, which owns 6.39 percent. Tmap Mobility traces its roots to a navigation service launched by SK Telecom in 2002. The telecom operator spun off its mobility business into a separate company in December 2020, and Tm

Hanwha Systems wins SAR microsatellite constellation project

Hanwha Systems has won a contract to develop synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites for Korea's microsatellite constellation aimed at enhancing national security and disaster response capabilities, data showed Friday. The defense solutions arm of Hanwha Group was selected for the SAR satellite development project commissioned by the state-run Agency for Defense Development (ADD), according to the Public Procurement Service. The microsatellite development project is a joint initiative involving the defense ministry, the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and the Korea Coast Guard to strengthen surveillance of security threats and natural disasters on the Korean Peninsula and in surrounding waters. SAR satellites can capture images of land and sea regardless of weather conditions or time of day. Operating a constellation of small satellites allows for more frequent monitoring of specific areas and faster intelligence gathering. Hanwha Systems has previously supplied SAR sensors and data links for Korea's military reconnaissance satellites.
