Schizophrenia is one of the top 15 leading causes of disability worldwide, according to Lancet’s Global Burden of Disease Study. Surveys by JAMA Psychiatry have found that this disorder affects one in 100 people in the U.S., an equivalent to 3.4 million adults; despite its low prevalence, the National Institute of Mental Health says that it is associated with significant health, social, and economic concerns due to the disproportionately high healthcare costs and increased risks of death associated with the disorder.

Schizophrenia is characterized by distorted thought processes and perceptions, with common symptoms being hallucinations, delusions, cognitive dysfunction, and reduced emotional expression. Because its impacts on daily functioning can be severe, patients typically require professional care paired with medications to manage symptoms. One medication often prescribed to treat schizophrenia is quetiapine, as it is generally tolerated better than other dibenzothiazepine derivatives, according to AMFM’s guide.

Quetiapine can relieve schizophrenia and bipolar disorder symptoms by normalizing dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in better mood regulation and more stable thoughts and behaviors. Because of the drug’s effects, it can also reduce anxiety, OCD, depression, and sleep disorder symptoms, and it is often prescribed off-label for these purposes. AMFM’s guide notes that different conditions will require varying doses; for example, a sleep disorder may need less medication than severe schizophrenia.

While quetiapine is associated with fewer side effects than other psychotropic medications, AMFM advises users to be aware of vomiting, congestion, headaches, indigestion, and joint pain over the short term, and irritability, osteoporosis, weight gain, and tardive dyskinesia over the long term. Additionally, the medication comes with an FDA black box warning stating that it may increase the risk of death in elderly dementia patients.

Quetiapine should also never be stopped abruptly, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms. For those who want to quit, AMFM recommends slowly reducing their dose as directed by a healthcare professional.

'AI artists' perform improvised jazz at Jarasum Jazz Festival

Artificial intelligence (AI) models developed by a research team led by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) professor Nam Ju-han made their debut at one of Korea’s leading jazz festivals, performing improvised jazz alongside human artists. According to the university Friday, the team showcased human-AI music collaboration technology that analyzes the flow of human performances in real time, allowing AI to take over performances or generate improvised accompaniment, during the 23rd Jarasum Jazz Festival, held in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, from Oct. 9 to 11. A total of 12 human jazz artists participated in the event, collaborating with AI in 26 pieces across 12 performances. The technology is different from existing music AI services as it enables collaboration with human musicians in jazz, a genre characterized by improvisation. Jazz musicians often change the tempo or create new melodies based on how they feel in the moment. Because the same piece can be performed differently each time, musicians must listen to one another and adjust their playing accord

Why Indonesian fintech’s ASEAN expansion cost more than anyone priced in

Indonesian fintech expansion into ASEAN looks different in 2026 than it did when Investree opened its Thailand operations in 2018 and its Philippines unit shortly after. The cohort of Indonesian platforms that pushed beyond the domestic market between 2018 and 2022 (Investree, Modalku, several payment players, a handful of insurtechs) encountered a structural cost that […] The post Why Indonesian fintech’s ASEAN expansion cost more than anyone priced in appeared first on e27.

[INTERVIEW] Alaska Airlines eyes Asia expansion as Korea route gains traction

SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines is looking to expand its presence in Asia as its Incheon-Seattle route gains traction, with Korea emerging as a key market in the U.S. carrier’s expanding international network. The airline recorded load factors of 82 percent in June, 84 percent in July and 79 percent in August on the route, marking a strong start in its first full year of operations. The figures exceeded expectations for a new route, which typically takes about three years to mature as the airline adjusts schedules and connections to meet passenger demand. "Those are really good, strong load factors for the first year of a new route," Shane Tackett, president and chief financial officer of Alaska Airlines, said in an interview with The Korea Times on Sept. 29. He added that one month ranked among Alaska's best-performing international routes financially before fuel prices increased significantly. The airline sees further opportunities to attract passengers from Korea, where its brand remains relatively unfamiliar. Tackett said Alaska Airlines aims to raise awareness of its services and enco
