Watchdog chief urges securities firms to shore up shareholder value

The Korea Times - Sep 29, 2026

The chief of Korea's financial watchdog on Tuesday called on securities firms to shore up shareholder value and heighten risk management for rising interest rates. In a meeting with heads of 28 securities firms, Lee Chan-jin, governor of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), said local brokerage firms had racked up record profits amid a stock bull run. "Securities firms that benefited the most from the growth of the capital market should play a greater role in leading market reform, and work to boost shareholder value," Lee said. The FSS chief also called for better management of loans extended to investors as part of efforts to reduce market volatility. Lee, in addition, urged securities firms to better prepare for rising interest rates.

Red ginseng gains attention for immune health amid flu surge

With the flu spreading earlier than usual this year, market interest is growing in products that may help support immune health, including red ginseng. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of patients with influenza-like illnesses reached 25.3 per 1,000 outpatients during the first week of September. This is nearly double the epidemic threshold of 12.9 and up sharply from 13.3 in late August. COVID-19 is also spreading alongside the flu. During the same period, 193 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, more than triple the number four weeks earlier. Last year, the government issued a flu advisory on Oct. 17, but this year it issued the advisory on Sept. 11 and began its vaccination program on Sept. 21. Against this backdrop, consumers are showing growing interest not only in vaccination but also in products that support immune health as part of broader preventive care, with red ginseng among those drawing increased attention. Red ginseng has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for seven potential health benefits, inclu

1982 Ventures joins Limited’s US$18.5M seed round to simplify cross-border business banking

For companies selling, hiring or operating across multiple countries, the promise of going global often runs into a very old problem: banking still behaves as if borders are hard walls. Opening local accounts can require entities, paperwork and long waits. Payments move through correspondent banks. Foreign exchange fees are not always clear. Finance teams end […] The post 1982 Ventures joins Limited’s US$18.5M seed round to simplify cross-border business banking appeared first on e27.

Pope Leo says AI concerns are not 'fake news,' must act on safety issues

Pope Leo XIV on Monday said mounting concerns about artificial intelligence software going rogue require discussions on how to regulate it, dismissing the notion that they are "fake news." "If someone were to ask me, 'Am I in panic mode?' No, I’m not," Leo told reporters while leaving France for Vatican City. "I sleep at...

Zuckerberg’s Muse Charm doesn’t care about your ad budget

This week at Meta Connect, Mark Zuckerberg held up something that looked like a toy. The Muse Charm is a keychain-sized gadget with a little animated avatar on its screen. You press it, talk to it, and your Muse agent gets to work. Meta says it will ship by December. The Muse agent behind it […] The post Zuckerberg’s Muse Charm doesn’t care about your ad budget appeared first on e27.

Can Bitcoin hold US$82,000? Inside the security fear and macro storm

Bitcoin is down 1.05 per cent to US$83,491.07 in 24 hours. The total crypto market has fallen 1.49 per cent to US$2.86 trillion. My view is that this decline is not one single story. It is a two-part selloff in which a major security breach and a broader macroeconomic risk-off shift have collided. The Bitget […] The post Can Bitcoin hold US$82,000? What I have learned watching foreign tech companies build in Singapore

When foreign technology companies first speak to me about Singapore, the conversation usually starts with one of three things: customers, talent or tax. Government funding often comes much later. That surprises me because Singapore has a sizeable ecosystem of grants, tax incentives and investment support available to companies building substantive operations here. But there is […] The post What I have learned watching foreign tech companies build in Singapore appeared first on e27.

Passing 1.5°C global warming: Performative ESG is no longer acceptable

The planet has already passed 1.5°C of warming against pre-industrial levels, or it’s very near. This isn’t fiction or a scam; it’s science and it’s existential. The 1.5°C target was set at the 2015 Paris Agreement after intense pressure from vulnerable island nations. It was meant to head off irreversible tipping points like catastrophic sea-level […] The post Passing 1.5°C global warming: Performative ESG is no longer acceptable appeared first on e27.

AI governance is moving from promises to proof

For much of the past three years, the politics of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolved around relatively familiar questions. Will AI take jobs? Who owns the copyright to the material on which models are trained? Can companies protect personal data? And who should be responsible when an algorithm causes harm? Britain’s latest AI debate suggests […] The post AI governance is moving from promises to proof appeared first on e27.

Samsung Group to invest $1 bil. in AI infrastructure company Helix

Korean conglomerate Samsung Group said Tuesday it will invest a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, a U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure company backed by private equity firm KKR & Co. Six affiliates — Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance — will participate in the investment, Samsung said in a statement. Samsung Electronics will invest $500 million, while the other five affiliates will invest a combined $500 million. Helix was launched in June by KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and U.S. power producer Vistra Corp., with more than $10 billion in committed long-term capital. The company is led by Adam Selipsky, the former chief executive of Amazon Web Services. Nvidia is a strategic partner, while Vistra is Helix's preferred power partner. The Samsung affiliates will join KKR, Nvidia, Vistra and the Kuwait Investment Authority as founding investors in Helix through the investment, Samsung said. As the AI industry expands rapidly, the importance of infrastructure n

News outlets ask court to give ‘little weight’ to DOJ support for OpenAI in copyright dispute

A group of news outlets suing OpenAI for copyright infringement argued Monday that the court should give “little weight” to the views of the Department of Justice (DOJ), which signaled support for the AI firm earlier this month. The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and other outlets in the case suggested the administration “may have...

Fed's Cook says AI demand 'broadening' to increase inflation

Federal Reserve board of governors member Lisa Cook said Monday that rising demand for artificial intelligence is leading to “broadening” inflationary impacts, with implications for the entire economy. During a keynote speech at the Oakland Tech Week conference, Cook noted that prices for Al-related goods, including chips, computers and software, have “surged” in the past...
