Unicorns are real: Tech baffles Indonesian candidate

Feb 18, 2019

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia's presidential candidates debated some of the most pressing issues facing the world's third-largest democracy: dilapidated infrastructure, struggling farmers, forest fires — and unicorns. When President Joko Widodo, who is seeking a second term, asked challenger Prabowo Subianto about his policies for supporting Indonesian unicorns a look of bafflement passed across the former general's face. Wondering aloud, he replied: "What are unicorns? You mean those online things?" Widodo sagely nodded in the affirmative before Subianto explained he supports online businesses. Subianto was probably not alone in his ignorance, but social media in Indonesia gleefully seized on Sunday...

UK lawmakers slam Facebook, recommend stiffer regulation

Feb 18, 2019

NEW YORK — British lawmakers issued a scathing report Monday that accused Facebook of intentionally violating privacy and anti-competition laws in the U.K., and called for greater oversight of social media companies. The report on fake news and disinformation on social media sites followed an 18-month investigation. The parliamentary committee that prepared the report says social media sites should have to follow a mandatory code of ethics overseen by an independent regulator to better control harmful or illegal content. The report called out Facebook in particular, saying that the site's structure seems to be designed to "conceal knowledge of and...

Return to sender: High court to hear undeliverable mail case

Feb 18, 2019

WASHINGTON — Mitch Hungerpiller thought he had a first-class solution for mail that gets returned as undeliverable, a common problem for businesses that send lots of letters. But the process he helped develop and built his small Alabama technology company around has resulted in a more than decadelong fight with the U.S. Postal Service, which says his solution shouldn't have been patentable. The David vs. Goliath dispute has now arrived at the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, the justices will hear Hungerpiller's case, which involves parsing the meaning of a 2011 patent law. "All I want is a fair shake," said...

Authorities remove cougar from tree outside California home

Feb 18, 2019

HESPERIA, Calif. — Firefighters have rescued a very big cat — a mountain lion — from a tree outside a home in the Southern California desert. The homeowner called authorities Saturday after spotting the animal near the edge of the San Bernardino Mountains. San Bernardino County firefighters found the large mountain lion perched on a branch about 50 feet (15 meters) high. State wildlife personnel tranquilized the animal. Firefighters lowered it to the ground using a rescue harness. A biologist evaluated the cougar before it was released back into the wild. State Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden Rick Fischer...

Potential privacy lapse found in Americans' 2010 census data

Feb 18, 2019

WASHINGTON — An internal team at the Census Bureau found that basic personal information collected from more than 100 million Americans during the 2010 head count could be reconstructed from obscured data, but with lots of mistakes, a top agency official disclosed Saturday. The age, gender, location, race and ethnicity for 138 million people were potentially vulnerable. So far, however, only internal hacking teams have discovered such details at possible risk, and no outside groups are known to have grabbed data intended to remain private for 72 years, chief scientist John Abowd told a scientific conference. The Census Bureau is...
